Three days ahead of a 31 January deadline to negotiate a new data transfer deal between the EU and the US, The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) is calling on the European Commission and the European data protection authorities to make sure they comply with the recent European Court of Justice ruling on EU data rights.

BEUC welcomes the agreement to update the 1995 EU law on personal data protection. Although imperfect it will strengthen consumers’ fundamental right to the protection of their personal data. Strong monitoring and enforcement by national supervisors to ensure companies abide by the rules will be crucial for the law’s success.

As part of its Digital Single Market strategy, the European Commission has released proposals which address consumer rights in the digital era1. The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) welcomes the rights put forward to protect consumers who purchase digital goods and who try to access and use their on-line subscriptions for films, TV programmes and series when travelling across borders.
