EU consumer protection authorities pile additional pressure on Temu for use of unfair commercial practices

BEUC NEWS - 8 November 2024

National consumer protection authorities (the Consumer Protection Cooperation network, or CPC), coordinated by the European Commission, have piled more pressure on online marketplace Temu by asking it to make commitments within one month in order to comply with consumer law. BEUC welcomes the announcement of the CPC network and urges Temu to comply immediately with EU law, short of which authorities should show their teeth and start imposing large fines.

This announcement comes hot on the heels of last week’s opening of an investigation by the European Commission against Temu for multiple and serious breaches of the Digital Services Act.

The CPC network’s action clearly shows that effective enforcement requires increased cooperation and joint actions between EU enforcement networks to protect consumers.

BEUC filed complaints in May this year that Temu was ignoring legislation to protect consumers online.
