A smoother consumer pathway to renewables in Slovakia

Slovakia advanced its energy legislation and initiatives over summer and important changes and opportunities are emerging for consumers.

What is new?

Starting in July 2024, Slovak households can now share their surplus electricity generated from their own sources, such as photovoltaic panels, with their neighbours or second homes. Consumers can choose how and in what proportion the self-generated electricity will be distributed among others. This new framework allows consumers to optimise electricity consumption and enhance savings.

Another milestone is that consumers have gained more control and flexibility in managing their electricity and gas contracts, including the ability to switch suppliers at any time without paying a switching fee. From next year, suppliers are also obliged to remove all advertising and unnecessary data from energy bills to make bills easier to understand for consumers.

More good news

After being on hold for more than a year, the Green for Households project has resumed its support for renewable energy solutions, now including state subsidies for purchasing and installing air-to-air heat pumps. Households can receive up to €3,800 for replacing a gas boiler with a heat pump and a higher funding of up to €4,370 is available for those transitioning from solid fuel heating such as wood or coal. Subsidies for photovoltaics and heat pumps have become the most popular, while interest in biomass boilers has declined.

These measures help consumers navigate through the complexities of the energy market and facilitate the adoption of sustainable technologies while benefiting from substantial financial savings.

As heat pumps are becoming a cornerstone of sustainable home heating, the CLEAR HP project is supporting consumers in Slovakia and six other European countries through collective purchase campaigns, offering another cost-effective option to purchase high-quality heat pumps.
