Monique Goyens, Director General of The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) and appointed expert to the Commission’s fake news group, has voted against the final report which was presented in Brussels today. Monique Goyens deplores that the report does not tackle the root causes of fake news.
In 2017, more than 2,000 non-food products failing safety requirements were notified to the EU’s rapid alert system (RAPEX). This figure might however only show the tip of the iceberg because of insufficient market checks.

The European Commission proposed new EU-wide crowdfunding rules today which could have served as a solid basis to protect people who invest through crowdfunding platforms. Unfortunately, the EU licence they propose is only of interest to the platforms that operate in more than one country and, even then, remains optional.
