Portability of online subscriptions
It was often impossible to use an online subscription you had if you were not physically in the country you had purchased it in. This made it impossible for example to access their French iTunes account if they were in Spain.
BEUC believed this inconvenience was a nuisance for consumers and that these artificial territorial barriers were unfair and outdated, preventing consumers to enjoy the benefits of the Single market and technological developments. We set out to convince policymakers about the need to remove existing barriers, stemming outdated copyright rules, and ensure that consumers who are abroad can use their online content subscriptions in the same way as at home.
Thanks to an EU law which entered into force in April 2018, consumers are able to use their online subscriptions for their favourite video-on-demand provider, music streams or games when travelling within the EU.
