Statistics published today in the EU’s alert system for dangerous non-food products report (Safety Gate) highlight the importance of market surveillance and the pressing need to fill regulatory loopholes. Member States’ authorities made a record-high 4,137 notifications to the Safety Gate in 2024, representing nearly a 50% increase compared to 2022.

On Friday 13 December 2024, companies operating in the EU will have to comply with new rules to make everyday products safer. These include criteria manufacturers and authorities will need to account for when assessing the safety of products. Economic operators including online marketplaces will need to boost traceability. Also, it should be easier for consumers to report products that might present a risk to their health and safety.

Consumer groups from the BEUC network have today filed complaints with authorities against booming Chinese online marketplace Temu for failing to protect consumers and for using manipulative practices which are illegal under recent EU legislation.
