The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) has written to relevant EU enforcement authorities to share its concerns that Meta’s latest pay-or-consent policy in the EU may be infringing consumer and data protection law as well as the Digital Markets Act.

The much-anticipated report from former Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, laying out how to boost EU industry’s competitiveness on the global stage, contains positive signals on energy, and trade, but raises questions on competition which could end up hurting European consumers’ pockets.

Today, the European Commission and national consumer protection authorities in the EU (the Consumer Protection Cooperation network) announced they have taken action against Meta’s pay-or-consent policy rolled out as of November 2023 to Facebook and Instagram users. BEUC welcomes that the Commission and the national authorities agreed to follow up on BEUC’s coordinated set of complaints filed against the company.

Consumer groups from the BEUC network have today filed complaints with authorities against booming Chinese online marketplace Temu for failing to protect consumers and for using manipulative practices which are illegal under recent EU legislation.
