A new test by ten consumer organisations shows how silicone baking moulds can contaminate cakes, cookies, and other baked goods with unwanted chemicals. BEUC therefore urges the EU to rethink its food packaging laws to better protect consumers.

EU institutions have concluded a reform of product safety legislation. While the new law reflects market developments such as the rise of connected products, it does not fully tackle the sale of dangerous or non-compliant products via online marketplaces.

The European Commission has today proposed to update civil liability rules for products and services to make them fit for purpose in the digital era. BEUC has repeatedly called for their modernisation, and for a clear and enforceable legal framework, given that products are increasingly digitalised, complex, opaque and when powered with AI, can take autonomous decisions.

EU Member States are following the approach of the European Parliament in not making online marketplaces liable for dangerous products sold online by third-party vendors using their platforms.
