Negotiators representing the three EU institutions last night hammered out a deal on renewable energy policy out to 2030. The deal means households producing electricity using solar panels can no longer be barred from selling their electricity to the grid and must at least get the market price for it.

A European Parliament committee has today voted to give consumers greater rights in tomorrow’s energy market. The energy (ITRE) committee was voting on Commission proposals to reform the electricity market out to 2030.

In its plenary session today, the European Parliament voted in favour of proposals to make it easier for consumers to produce renewable energy. This has set it on course for a showdown with Member States later this year, who have been reluctant to create an electricity market where consumers feed energy they produce into the grid.
