At a meeting in Brussels today, EU transport ministers failed to put pressure on Volkswagen to compensate EU consumers over the use of a defeat device to hide air pollution emissions. However, European Commissioner for Internal Market and Industry Elżbieta Bieńkowska said during the meeting that Member States should assess all available legal tools to ensure that owners are compensated.

The EU’s governments today agreed to a proposal which would allow consumers to watch or listen their online video or music subscriptions when they travel to another EU country. The proposal will become EU law once the European Parliament has given its approval.

The European Parliament today voted through a report which calls on the Commission to create a more consumer-friendly energy market. The report, ‘A New Deal for Consumers’, is a timely call ahead of a Commission legislative package due in the second half of the year, expected to cover issues related to energy bills, supplier switching, smart meters or small-scale generation of renewable energy by consumers.
