PRESS RELEASE - 28.10.2022
The EU has decided to reduce CO2 emissions from cars by 100% in 2035 (with the year 2021 as baseline). This means that no new combustion engine car can be sold as of that year.
Monique Goyens, Director General at the European Consumer Organisation (BEUC), commented:
“This decision is good news for consumers, as it stimulates car makers to bring cleaner vehicles to market at a fast pace. The future of driving is clearly electric, benefitting the environment and people’s wallets.
“Consumer research has shown that all car owners stand to save money by going electric, which will lower costs for those who depend on a car. Second- and third-hand owners particularly bear less of the car’s depreciation and benefit from low maintenance and running costs. This EU decision will effectively help create this second-hand market, which in turn fast-tracks these expected savings.”
