Letter: the GDPR should be better enforced, not reopened

BEUC NEWS - 24.04.2025

This morning, BEUC wrote to Executive Vice-President Virkkunen and Commissioner McGrath to urge them not to reopen the GDPR and to instead enforce this important law that protects consumers’ personal data.

The letter comes on the heels of various calls to reopen the GDPR, ranging from the exclusion of some entities such as small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from the law’s scope to excluding even bigger companies (“small mid cap” companies) from  certain obligations.

These modifications would be very concerning and would undermine data protection and create legal uncertainty.
