Goodbye halogen spotlights, hello more efficient LEDs
Goodbye halogen spotlights, hello more efficient LEDs
BEUC NEWS - 05.09.2016
Halogen spotlights are progressively disappearing from EU shops since last week. The EU-wide ban discourages the use of energy-guzzling lamps and supports a transition to more efficient alternatives.
As of 1 September, standard halogen spotlights will be on sale until stocks are depleted. Multi-directional halogen lamps will be phased out in 2018.
The ban is a great opportunity for consumers to switch to LEDs and save money in the long term. Our British member Which? found recently that in comparison to halogen lightbulbs, LEDs last much longer and are cheaper to run. LED prices are also going down, which is good news for consumers.
