Ecodesigned4LIFE
Ecodesigned4LIFE
Ecodesigned4LIFE aims to promote the representation of civil society in the preparation of EU rules setting sustainability criteria for the design of products and promoting energy and resource efficiency. Thanks to this project, the partners will be consulted and involved in the preparatory processes leading to implementing measures and their reviews under the Ecodesign (ED) and Energy Labelling (EL) legislations, Tyre labelling, as well as in the other relevant EU legislative developments.
The Consortium consists of three project partners – the European Consumer Organisation (BEUC), the Environmental Coalition on Standards (ECOS) and the European consumer voice in standardisation (ANEC). Each organisation is a well-established member of the Ecodesign and Energy Labelling Consultation Forum (EELCF), which assists the European Commission with the development and review of ED and EL regulations. They rely on a network of member organisations and experts in all EU Member States and beyond, enabling a broad representation of consumer and environmental interests in the process.
For the past few decades, the ED and EL frameworks have contributed to reducing energy consumption and increasing the overall sustainability of household appliances. By improving energy and resource efficiency, the frameworks have helped consumers to save money and make more sustainable choices. In a study BEUC commissioned in 2022, it was estimated that thanks to current Ecodesign measures, European households can save €650 every year on their energy costs. The recent adoption of the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) entails an even bigger saving potential for consumers. Future Ecodesign measures will systematically improve products’ sustainability, such as their durability, reliability, repairability and recyclability.

The main activity of Ecodesigned4LIFE is to contribute to the relevant fora where ecodesign and energy labelling of products are being discussed. Our Consortium will provide technical input to the European Commission regarding the real-life usage of products, and the environmental and consumer interests that should be considered when developing the legislation, not only through the EELCF, but also through stakeholder and public consultations. In addition, the Consortium will raise awareness and build the capacity of national consumer and environmental representatives for greater involvement of civil society in ED and EL developments.
Through regular consultation with members and external experts as well as exchanges with the wider stakeholders within the ecodesign community, our Consortium will identify aspects of consumer and environmental relevance and translate these into adequate policy recommendations to the European Commission.
